Quick start

The shortest safe workflow from opening the tool to completing the job.

1 Add files

Choose the PDFs or supported images you want to inspect.

2 Review findings

Check detected metadata and privacy-relevant categories.

3 Preview removal

Use the removal detail view to understand what the clean operation targets.

4 Create clean copies

Run Recommended Privacy Clean when privacy-relevant fields are present.

5 Verify and locate

Review Verification Results, then use Show in Finder.

Adding and inspecting files

Controls used before any cleaning takes place.

Add Files

Adds files to the current inspection session.

Choose one or more supported PDFs or images. Premium can be used for batch inspection rather than working with only one file at a time.

Useful to know: You can add several files, review them individually, and create separate cleaned copies without overwriting the originals.

Choose Files to Inspect

Starts file selection from the empty-state screen.

Use this when no files are loaded yet. It performs the same file-selection role as Add Files and begins local metadata inspection.

Useful to know: FilesStayLocal performs the inspection on your Mac.

Privacy Findings

Shows metadata fields classified as privacy-relevant.

Review the detected fields for each file before cleaning. A file may contain ordinary technical metadata as well as fields that are more relevant to privacy.

Useful to know: A Privacy Check Passed status means the supported inspection rules did not detect privacy-relevant metadata; it is not a guarantee that no application-specific hidden data exists.

Location, Device, Identity and Dates

Groups important metadata into understandable privacy categories.

Location covers GPS and location fields. Device covers camera, phone, lens and device information. Identity includes author, artist, copyright and creator information. Dates include capture, creation and modification timestamps.

Useful to know: Examples can include GPS coordinates, camera serial/model details, author names, software names and document properties.

Cleaning controls

Understand exactly what happens before and during privacy cleaning.

See exactly what will be removed

Opens the detailed removal view before cleaning.

Use this when you want to inspect the privacy-relevant fields that the recommended cleaning operation is designed to remove for that file format.

Useful to know: This is the best place to review the intended Before → After change before creating a clean copy.

No Privacy Cleanup Needed

Indicates that the supported inspection rules did not find privacy-relevant metadata requiring the recommended clean operation.

Review the findings and limitations before sharing if the file is especially sensitive.

Useful to know: The status refers to supported metadata inspection, not to arbitrary information embedded visibly inside the document itself.

Clear Session

Removes the currently loaded inspection results from the app session.

Use this after you finish reviewing the current files and want a clean workspace for another set.

Useful to know: Clearing the session does not delete your original files or cleaned copies.

Verification and output

What happens after a cleaned copy is created.

Verification Results

Shows the post-clean rescan of the newly created copy.

FilesStayLocal rescans the cleaned copy and reports the before and after privacy-field counts. Review this result before sharing the output.

Useful to know: Cleaned & Verified reports the result of the supported post-clean checks.

Show in Finder

Locates the cleaned output file in macOS Finder.

Use it after verification when you are ready to inspect or share the new copy.

Useful to know: Cleaned versions are written to a separate FilesStayLocal Cleaned Copies folder beside the original.

Cleaned copy naming

Prevents FilesStayLocal from overwriting an existing cleaned copy.

If the intended cleaned filename already exists, FilesStayLocal creates a numbered filename automatically.

Useful to know: Keep the original separately until you have reviewed the cleaned result.

Supported formats and limitations

Explains what the current cleaner can inspect and clean.

The current workflow supports PDFs and common image formats including JPEG / JPG, PNG, HEIC / HEIF and TIFF / TIF. Image cleaning uses Apple's ImageIO metadata support. PDF cleaning targets document-level metadata and does not rasterize pages.

Useful to know: Metadata standards vary. Information embedded inside visible document content is different from ordinary metadata and may require a different privacy tool.
No matching control found. Try a shorter word such as “OCR”, “Trash”, “Finder”, “Clean” or “Verify”.

Safety and privacy notes

Important behaviour to understand before sharing, cleaning or exporting files.

Original files

Metadata Cleaner writes separate outputs and does not overwrite the source file.

Verification

Always review the cleaned copy and Verification Results when privacy is important.

Visible content

Metadata cleaning does not remove sensitive information visibly written inside a document or image.

Local processing

Inspection and cleaning are designed to occur locally on the Mac.
